The MergeArea are the cells that are merged with the ActiveCell.

Merge some cells and try the following:

Immediate Window Ctrl G

? ActiveCell.MergeArea.address

? ActiveCell.MergeArea.cells.count

If the ActiveCell isn't merged the count will be 1.
