Step 157 - Using fx to understand a formula

I recently looked at the formula



=SUMIFS($G$1:$G$6,$E$1:$E$6,E10,$F$1:$F$6,F10)

and thought that it was unreadable.

But if you press the fx in the formula bar,

the Function Arguments dialog pops up.

which makes it easier to understand.

This is an example of the =SUMIFS( ) function. Its purpose is to sum data based on multiple conditions.

Here is the data and formulas I entered

Older versions of Excel don't support the SUMIFS( ) function so you could do the following

in D2 enter =A2&"-"&B2
Copy it down to cell D7
and copy to D11 and D12
in E11 enter =SUMIF($D$2:$D$7,D11,$C$2:$C$7) and copy to E12
